WiLAT
Sri Lanka Walk 2016, organized by the
women’s forum of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) was held for the second
successive year on 24th September 2016 with the theme of “For a
Greener Tomorrow”. The sole objective of the event was to create awareness on reducing the carbon footprint in the
industries they operate and to promote and encourage green practices and
eco-friendly lifestyle in one’s personal life. Starting from
Independence Square, Colombo 07, with the participation of many industry
renowned personnel and undergraduates from University of Moratuwa, Kotalawala
Defense University and CINEC Maritime campus, the walk was propped with many
attractive eco-friendly models and posters made by three universities.
The
concept of “Smart city” was chosen by the Department of Transport and Logistics
Management at University of Moratuwa, in presenting their props at the float
competition. Under the guidance of Students Coordinator Mr. Nishal Samarasekara
and with the lead of ’15 batch (level 01), many hand-made recyclable structures
were made in order to promote public transport over private vehicles,
eco-friendly modes of transportation and also innovative green techniques and
solutions that can be easily apply in everyday logistics. In addition, many
informative and creative posters and banners were designed by the students in
order to pass the message while living up to the concept.
After
many sleepless nights of hard work for the team from University of Moratuwa,
the opportunity was given to present and explain the concept chosen, along with
other competitors under a panel of judges headed by Mr. Romesh David, International Vice President. The day
became further remarkable for the Mora Smart City team with them emerging as
the champions at the float competition at the Open Air Theater, Viharamahadevi
Park. Winners were awarded with gift vouchers and all special invitees were
appreciated with eco-friendly ornaments.
With that
addition to their bag of achievements, Department of Transport and Logistics
Management at University of Moratuwa, was yet again successful in becoming the
best potential professionals in the industry.
