It was the day everyone was waiting for, with stories from their past and curiosity to know what would unfold before them. “I speak TLM”, the impromptu public speaking program was organized by our very own Sahan Lakshan and Harsha Chamara, in order to develop and enhance public speaking skills of undergraduates at Department of Transport and Logistics Management. Starting from ’15 batch, this program has been planned to introduce for the coming batches as well.
After a series of promotions through the TLM MORA website, mobile app and facebook page, on 25th Oct 2016, at 5.30 p.m. “I speak TLM” was held at Department rooftop with the participation all batch mates. This first event was remarked with Mr. Nishal Samarasekara, Student Coordinator of the Department volunteering as the general evaluator for the day.
Under the blissful sunset, the time was to inaugurate the program with the welcome speech of Students Representative Madushan Pathirana. The aim and objectives of the program was conveyed with a promise to continue “I speak TLM” without any failure for the years to come. Then the most awaited round robin session took place shooting everyone with the fun question, “What would you do if you have one day to live with a chance of asking someone else to sacrifice life instead yours?” Evening was full of laughter and emotions with wonderful answers given by the participants. Most frequent answer by no surprise was to “eat as much as I can and die happily”!

Next was the time for the most important event, “Table topics round”. With ten creative topics offered by Sahan Lakshan, participants were given the chance to take up their chance and deliver a speech under any topic of preference. Proving the confidence within, an impromptu speech was delivered by each and everyone gathered sharing their experiences and imaginations. Two of the topics on the board that caught my eyes were, “If she/he wasn’t there...” and “The unforgettable day of my life”. Many spoke about how they faced difficult times, courage they built up and also what they want to be in five years time. Session was full with hilarious and dramatic speeches (especially Kethaka Galappaththi’s dream as the CEO of Deepdown Railway Co.) as well as soulful expressions of speakers (could not forget Jithmi Udumulla’s speech on facing life).
The gathering was even blessed by the Mother Nature with a refreshing drizzle by the end of the evening. Marking the end of the round, stage was taken by Mr. Samarasekara to present his ideas of the event and speeches heard. Also the chance was taken to deliver a speech of his own to two topics of his like making the evening more joyful. After thanking the all due personalities and team work in making “I speak TLM” a success, the first program of another milestone was ended for the week.
“I see much potential and teak work in this group of young students that I have never seen anywhere before. I’m surprised by the improvement everyone has achieved during this short time from the first day of our meeting. I have no doubt that all of you will go to places!” added, Mr. Samarasekara.
